Was hoping for some advice please. We're planning on driving from San Diego to Phoenix as part of a road trip in June and were wondering what the best route to take would be. The direct route appears to be the 125 which runs close to the Mexican border in places. Is this recommended or would we be better off heading back up to LA and travelling on Highway 10 and going past Palm Springs, etc.

I don't know where you got I-25. It is I-8. It does go close to the border but it is safe. it is the main route between San Diego and Phoenix/Tucson. Yuma, just across the state line is a good stopping place. But the drive to Phoenix or Tucson is very easily done in one day. Suggest, though, that you make the drive on a weekday. On weekends, loads of folks with dune buggies flock to the dunes west of Yuma in California and getting through Yuma can be a nightmare because of traffic.

At Gila Bend, Arizona, you can take State Route 85, which goes north to I-10 and puts you at the western edge of the Phoenix area. Personally, I don't like 85 because the truck - those really big trucks - can be horrific.

I prefer heading east from Gila Bend to State Route 84 then take State Route 347 north through the reservations past the casinos and the Town of Maricopa to I-10 at the southern edge of the Phoenix area.

What you do want to drive is the I-8 Interstate into Yuma AZ, Continuing to Gila Bend ... There, take the 85(watch that speed)North, Distance from Phoenix to San Diego to the I-10 East, into the belly of the Beast ...You must be using a rogue version of Google maps! the 125 appears on none of my (paper) versions if California/Arizona and as a resident of the area, I have never driven same ... The I-25 is a North/South Interstate ... with mile post 0 at Las Cruces NM. Before you fall into further error ... What is the tour plan after scenic downtown Phoenix ??? carracar
