I don't know what all the stages are as I'm new to the DIY scene. I was told by the guy selling the skirting that all I needed was the right glue, a hacksaw and a jigsaw to cut exact 45 degree angles. Is this too simplistic?
Just the measuring, cutting, and gluing? (and presumably the gap filling). No way is that a full day's work for a pro (particularly not two of them). I'm all for DIY, but the problem with mitred edges is that (in my experience) you need a good saw to do them well. I'd still go get more quotes.

It might not take a full day to do but why would somone give up a full days work to do half day job. I'm a carpenter myself and from the sound of it it's not standard skirting it has a laminex finish which equals no room for error. Can't make any holes in it and has to be neat cuts.
