It’s not a secret that different colors complement different skin tones, whether it’s the colors of clothes, makeup, or hair! Today let’s take a look at different colored wigs and highlight wigs specifically and how to find the perfect color to suit your skin tone.
We all know that some colors may or may not suit a certain skin tone. That being said I personally am a firm believer that you can rock any color you like if you have the confidence. However, I will agree that some colors do in fact look better on certain skin tones. And as Alan Flusser once said, “the goal of color is to make a person look to your face and not to distract from it”. Now, without further ado, let’s get started in finding you the best-colored wigs that suit your skin tone!
What exactly is skin tone?
Before we can jump into colors that complement certain skin tones let’s first understand what exactly is skin tone? The easiest way to understand what skin tone you have is to do a fun little experiment! In natural daylight, look at the underside of your arm. If you have a pink or rosy undertone and blue-tinted veins, you have a cool skin tone. If you have a golden or apricot undertone and green-tinted veins, then you have a warm skin tone. You must understand, however, that skin tone is the natural color of your skin which can obviously change depending on the climate (i.e. whether it is winter or summer).
How do you find the colors that best work for you?
At some point or another, we have all wondered how it would feel to have hair color other than the natural one we are born with. For instance, I was born with dark brown hair and always wanted to try out something different but not too bold! And the easiest option for me, without the commitment, was to try out different colored wigs; gosh I just wish someone would have told me to avoid honey blonde wigs, and to stick to highlight wigs (human hair wigs, not synthetic) instead! Would have saved me a bunch! But not to worry! We will get to how exactly you can avoid making the same mistake that I did! So here is how you can figure out which works best for you!
I will begin by saying that if you are someone with a light undertone, dramatically dark hair will wash you out, on the other hand, if you are dark-skinned then going platinum blonde can be tricky! At the end of the day, any hair color is up for grabs regardless of your ethnicity – but naturally, there are some that will be much more flattering than others.
Hues for Dark skins:
Finding the perfect wig color for dark skins can be pretty challenging! The key is to remember that it does not only stand-alone with your skin color but your eye color too. Although brown is the most preferred hair color within dark-colored skin tones, honey blonde wigs (more specifically human hair wigs for that completely natural look) although a bit difficult to pull off, can do wonders if done right with a dark skin tone with dark eyes. Red-colored highlight wigs can also be a major head-turner for dark-skinned people.
Hues for light skins:
Ash, platinum blonde and blues go well with light skins with an olive undertone! As mentioned above, red goes really well with dark skins but for light skins, if you wish to pull it off you can have two main options, go for highlight wigs or stick to a red within the dark copper, or burgundy side. And the lighter your skin tone, the more a lighter share of the human hair wig will suit your face.
Universally flattering colors
The best part about colors is their flexibility and the never-ending variety! And you are in luck because no matter your skin tone and color there are certain colors that are universally flattering no matter the skin tone. The first being Bronde! A mesh of two major colors blonde and brown which is any person's first option for a basic new wig. The second is dark brown, which is a timeless color that suits just about every girl. Then we have honey blonde which is the perfect option for someone but blonde but not too blonde. And the last one on this list must be Platinum blonde! Somewhat of a scary color if you are not used to changing hair colors but it’s a good thing that none of these colors have to be set in stone and you are still free to mess around with different options!
At the end of this short introductory discussion on colors and skin tones, and colored wigs one thing is for certain; the world of mixing and matching skin tones to the perfect wig is a more complex story than what we have discussed. Consulting a professional before buying your highlight wig will be beneficial for you in the long run. And trust me! I know trying on new colors can be intimidating at first. But pulling off a good quality human hair wig will come as naturally to you as if you had just gotten your own hair dyed. Remember, the key to rocking any color is the confidence and the sass you bring with the color, to the table. And plus! The best part is, don’t feel happy with the color you have gotten? Not to worry at all! After all, that is exactly what wigs are here for! So you can experiment to your heart’s desire without worrying about the commitment that comes with actually dying your natural hair. Lastly, I will say that the process of finding the perfect color to match your skin tone may be a bit frustrating at first, but believe me, from experience, you will love it once you finally get there!
